The iPhone 12, and iPhone 12 mini are set to be Apple’s new handsets for 2020. The models come in 6.1 inch, and 5.4 inch sizes, with identical features.
This model is significantly smaller than the iPhone 11, meaning the device can be easily held in one hand (and can comfortably fit it in a clutch bag again.) The iPhone 12 mini will be the smallest phone Apple have made, since the iPhone SE in 2016.
The new features include support for faster 5G cellular networks, OLED display (which means the colour on the screen is now less washed out) with a new ceramic shield, improved cameras featuring a duel lens and Apple's latest A14 chip. All encased in a refreshed design which features sharper edges than the previous models. Basically - its waaaaaay faster, and has sharper edges giving it that retro Apple look.
The ceramic shield we mentioned above is a glass-ceramic hybrid. The ceramic crystals within the glass improve drop resistance over the iPhone 11, so say "goodbye" to smashed screens.
In terms of the cameras, the main difference to the iPhone 11 is the improvement in quality of night mode pictures, thanks to the faster lens. Other than that we didn't notice any remarkable improvements.
All the iPhone 12 models feature the Super Retina XDR OLED displays for the first time. This entails an edge to edge design, which is something of an upgrade from previous models.
As we mentioned Apple re-evaluated the design of the iPhone 12 line-up, giving them flat edges, a nod to the early iPhone designs and similar to the iPad pro edges. Curved edges have been part of the iPhone repertoire for six years, since the iPhone 6 came out in 2014.
Price wise the standard iPhone 12 starts from £799 for a 64GB configuration and iPhone 12 Mini is priced at £699. The Verge noticed that Apple has updated its official Repair Page to reveal that the iPhone 12 will cost more to repair than the iPhone 11.
The new A14 chip inside the phones are the first of its kind. Built on a 5-nanometer process for performance and efficiency improvements. Apple says the 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU in the A14 are 50% faster than the fastest competing smartphone chips.
The A14 chip also includes a 16-core neural engine that offers 80% increase in performance for machine learning tasks.
The back of the iPhone 12 continues to be crafted from glass and holding it together is an aerospace-grade aluminium enclosure which is available in five colours; blue, green, black white and red.
