Review: AirPods Pro - what we really thought

The team at Modems was able to try the AirPods a day early and this is what we thought...

Sound: The new design features active noise cancellation for immersive sound. Having noise cancelling on while you play music is an amazing experience - it really blocks out all external "city noise." This is through the introduction of silicon ear tips, which create a seal allowing for the noise cancelling technology to work.

Something new they have introduced is "Transparency" so lets say you are on the tube and want to listen to music but still hear the announcements - if you flick to transparency mode (all possible via your mobile) you can listen to music while still hearing external sounds, which is useful if you do not want to completely "noise cancel" the outside world.

Fit: Apple has included a vent so that there isn't an uncomfortable "vacuum" you may experience with other products that have sillicon eartips. There are 3 ear-tip sizes so you can find one that is right for you and there is a "fit test" you can perform where the AirPods will play music and use the internal microphone to test if the earphones are snug and have enough "seal" from the silicone ear tips to be adequate for noise cancelling and playing music. Like all silicone ear tips though they do look a bit mucky after use.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing has said: “The new in-ear AirPods Pro sound amazing with Adaptive EQ, fit comfortably with flexible ear tips and have innovative Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode. We think customers are going to love this new addition to the AirPods family."

Bonus features we liked:

Voice-activated Siri enable hands-free “Hey Siri” to play a song, increase the volume, make a call or get directions.

The 'audio sharing' features makes it easy to listen to the same song or watch the same movie as a friend (a relationship saver on plane/train journeys) by simply bringing a second pair of AirPods close to your iPhone

The 'announce messages' feature automatically and conveniently speaks incoming texts as soon as they arrive. So you can get updated while listening to music (you can choose a VIP list so you only get interrupted by texts that are important - not from all your contacts.)

AirPods Pro will be available tomorrow, 30 October, for £249 and are available to order from and in the Apple Store app in the UK and more than 25 other countries and regions.
