“The idea for The Modems first came about when I read a story about women being given VR headsets to ease the pain of childbirth during labour in a clinical trial at the University Hospital of Wales back in 2019.

At the time I was working at Harper’s Bazaar, and the story was given some online coverage by the BBC, but I failed to notice it being picked up by the major tech sites I visited on a daily basis, this was despite the fact it was the most interesting technology stories I had come across in a long time.

The Modems was founded when I realised that traditional tech websites were not focusing on the stories that my peers and I (female, womxn and femme) cared about. I quickly realised that tech reportage was an extremely gendered space, for instance stock images of tech normally featured male hands and imagery that seemed to exclude womxn. A lot has, thankfully, changed since then. At WebSummit 2022 there were more women in attendance than men for the first time in the event’s history.

I hope that this site gives everyone who visits a new point of view, and offers a platform for the tech stories that we care about and a voice for womxn in tech.”
