3 groundbreaking apps every mother should download

LatchAid, Peanut and Babbu: These 3 pioneering founders, used their experience of motherhood to launch incredible baby apps

A wave of innovation and investment in technologies are now seeing parenting take place in a tech-rich home, largely thanks to our smartphones. From breastfeeding apps, HD baby monitors, speech tech and smart diapers, the modern-day parent has a plethora of information, support, and advice at their fingertips.

What’s brilliant to see is a lot of not just female founders, but mothers themselves, behind these up-and-coming technologies, particularly apps, who are bringing their first-hand experiences directly to other mums around the world.

We’ve found some of the best apps out there, and explain who the amazing women behind them are:

LatchAid

LatchAid is the only breastfeeding and early parenthood app powered by innovation and empathy. The app was created by Dr. Chen Mao Davies whose dreams of nursing bliss did not materialise after her first child. Chen’s experiences turned into a catalyst to revolutionise the way new mums can access the help and support that they need as an individual for learning how to breastfeed.

LatchAid aims to provide help when it’s needed and advice when it’s wanted. Be It through Interactive 3D Animations to virtual breastfeeding support groups, the app has been developed and designed to give mum and baby all the support, knowledge, comfort, and community needed to successfully breastfeed.

Peanut

Whether you’re navigating fertility, pregnancy, motherhood or menopause, the Peanut App aims to provide access to a community who are there to listen, share information and offer valuable advice.

Peanut was founded in 2017 by Michelle Kennedy, after her first child. With so many questions and a limited support network, Michelle found herself trawling through online forums for help and answers – but they weren’t the safe space she was hoping for. Having worked in social networking for ten years, Michelle set out to reduce feelings of isolation and empower women to connect, all over the world.

The App’s main vision is to connect women from all walks of life, at every stage of life —from puberty and pregnancy through to motherhood and menopause. Women can use the app to chat with other mothers and women facing the same challenges.

Babbu

Babbu is an early development ed-tech company that has launched an online nursery app to support the parents and guardians of children under five years old. The app was started by three friends, including mum and entrepreneur Charlie Rosier. The three co-founders grew up in very different circumstances, each with their own experiences of breaking through barriers and understanding the financial blocks that allow some children to flourish while others play catch up.

With a background that spans 20 years of managing and working in nursery settings, the team have seen first-hand the importance of the early years. Now, with expert podcasts, blogs, tips, and hacks, delivered exactly when you need it, the app aims to be a secret weapon to empower both parent and child to reach their full potential.

The future of modern mums (and dads)

There’s no doubt that parenting technologies are growing, research by UK charity Nesta, revealed that between 2011 and 2021, global yearly investment in parenting technology had grown 15-fold over that period, compared to 10-fold across all sectors. In fact, the most popular area for investment in technology for parents and children over the last five years was in machine learning, followed by ebooks.

As investment increases, there’s certainly an exciting and helpful road ahead for the modern mums (and dads!) – be they using or creating the future tech innovations.
