Pinterest is letting you try on lipstick virtually

The image-collecting platform throws shade – and we’re living for it

Pinterest has launched Try On, powered by Lens. Similar to a Snapchat filter, the new augmented reality feature allows you to try on lipstick shades from beauty brands including YSL Beauté, Lancôme, and Estée Lauder.

The AR technology is embedded within shoppable Pins, so that you can save the looks you try on for later. It also offers visual recommendations for looks with similar colours, providing inspiration for hairstyles, outfits and other types of makeup that could go with it and allowing users to purchase via Pinterest links.

Try On is currently only accessible in the US through iOS and Android apps. The new feature can be accessed via the Pinterest camera in search: Pinners can ‘try on’ different shades, and swipe up to purchase on the retailer’s site.

A Try On button will also appear on select products, as well as in search with related terms like ‘matte lipstick‘ or ‘red lips’. As users try new lip shades, they can snap a picture and save it as a Pin so that they can refer back to it and purchase the lipstick. They can also explore different looks with the same shade of lipstick by scrolling below Try On and browsing ‘more like this‘.

Pinterest is starting AR with lipstick, but we will see more Lens launches from the platform in the coming months that will be rolled out globally in the future.
