Balenciaga team up with Fornite
The street savvy fashion house has collaborated with popular video game Fortnite creating in-game garments and limited edition physical pieces.
The clothing will appear in the video game on four characters. The Fortnite players are able to be purchased the skins and clothing to customise their character.
The collaboration followed followed the release of Afterworld - The Age of Tomorrow which was developed by Epic Games (creators of Fortnite), which came out in December 2020. The game showcased Balenciaga’s AW 21 collection. The game took players on an adventure to find a secret forest which lead to a rave.
"Our partnership with Epic didn't start with Fortnite, actually," said Balenciaga's creative director Demna Gvasalia.
"It started with our own first video game, Afterworld, which we built using Unreal Engine to debut our Fall 2021 collection."
"From [Afterworld: The Age of Tomorrow], we have continued to be inspired by the creativity of Unreal and Fortnite communities. It made total sense, to me, that we collaborate further by creating these authentic Balenciaga looks for Fortnite and a new physical Fortnite clothing series for our stores" Gvasalia said.
The digital collection features the fashion houses AW 21 collection which holds pieces inspired by medieval garments, with armour style pieces. The jeans with shredded tracksuit lining also feature, as well as the animal striped look from SS 20.
In-game weaponry has been restyled with a Balenciaga twist. The Balenciaga sock trainers were restyled to a range of pickaxes, and the hourglass bag has been morphed into a glider.
The physical garments are available now, and include a range of branded hoodies, t-shirts and caps.
